Get it cheaper at WalMart September 5, 2010 Bob Allen (Topeka,KS, USA) I love shopping at Amazon, but this price for the NWZ S545 Sony walkman MP3 is way too high. Check at WALMART online the price is $79 for the same unit and you don't have to pay for shipping. They will send it to a store near you. Happy shopping
Sony walkman s545 vs. ipod Nano 5g 16gb August 18, 2010 Scott Cavinder Pros: Price. Get it for [...], free shipping. Do the math, thats easily half the price of the 16gb Nano. I own both. Consider it a 4g ipod with FM radio, and external speakers.
Cons: Difficult to find accessories for it, mp3 stereo docking ect. No camera like the Nano, no sleek design like the nano. It's not that large, but when compared to the Nano, no comparison. Clicky buttons, not like the speed dial on a ipod. I recommend this, but remember, it is not an ipod.
Overall, A Great Alternative to iPod August 17, 2010 Ethan A. Winning (Walnut Creek, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my third Sony MP3 player. I have two 8 GB Sonys without the speakers. The fact that I have three should speak volumes about how much I like this player.
To assuage those who have been put off by the reviewers who don't like the software, that's ridiculous. The software works fine but, more important, you can sync these players to Windows Media Player or you can just drag and drop. Nothing could be simpler, and this little player easily picks up everything from album covers to all the info including the "genre" of and about the albums/songs you're adding.
Pluses: It works. It's still small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. The speakers are unbelievable for this mini-marvel.
The sound is bright and crisp, and has 7 equalizers plus two that you can customize yourself. You can tell the player that you just want "Classical" or "Pop" or a single artist or just play all. The battery will never last for all 3100 "songs" (some lengthy classical selections), but I'm still impressed with the 35-42 hours I've squeezed out of one charge.
It was for the battery life that I finally got away from iRiver (AA battery), knowing that I could get through a 16 hour day and flights without worrying about not carry a spare battery. And, small though it may be, this player holds (so far) 65 of the nature photographs that I've published. If you DO want to cut down on battery life, you can run a slide show on continuous display while playing music which is a little overkill.
The sound though earbuds is fantastic. Crisp highs and deep enough bass. Of course, this depends on what earbuds you're using and, oddly, instead of giving you a decent pair (see my review of Sony earbuds), they throw in the usual 99¢ crap.
Times, they are a'changing. While there are still some who will always go to iPod because they're the status symbol, I much prefer the Sony. The same people who get iPods are the people who rate pink over red and red over black. It's true. Look at V-MODA earbuds in red and black or even this player, and you'll see.
Cons: Now for the few minor (perhaps major depending upon YOU) complaints. First, Sony hasn't corrected this problem: when you turn on the player, it starts with a new song, BUT the second and third are the same no matter how you try to fool it. Even when you change the type of music (genre) when starting, the same some will always be second. After that, it straightens out and flies right.
I was really miffed at the fact that the black is $5 more than the red. That's not Sony's fault, but the retailers really tick me off.
Another con: this can only be charged through a USB hub or by buying the AC adapter. Be careful with the AC adapter. It tends to overcharge.
You can't listen while charging.
And you can't delete from the player using the player. You have to use the software OR Windows Multimedia Player.
And that's it for the negatives. Note that I once added some music which couldn't be erased using Sony's or the Media player software. Should that happen, you're probably going to have to reload your music. That's okay: there's probably stuff that you want to get rid of but were too lazy to hook it up for one of two songs. However, should you ever run into the problem of not being able to delete, you will find the "Reset" button on the back doesn't do much (or at least it didn't for me). But if you go to the "Toolbox" in the main menu, you can format the player, and then you have a blank slate.
Oh, and here's another PLUS. After having my first Sony for over a year - the Sony where I couldn't get rid of the one album - I called Sony and they couldn't have been nicer (Apple ought to take note), and the rep was the one who gave me the solution of formatting rather than resetting. Thank you Sony. I think I'll add them to Dell in the 6 star customer relations ratings.
feels dodgy!! August 15, 2010 Deamono 1 out of 13 found this review helpful
I got a Sony NWZE last year and wanted to replace it after it got stolen and so got this player and had it shipped a long way, only to find out it says made in China at the back. It looks ok but I dont even feel like using it now. The headphones that come with it look rubbish and rough and hurt my ears, unlike the ones that came with the cheaper NWZE.
To my dismay, the Indian reps Amazon have hired to answer queries have refused to take any responsibility for the item's country of origin. It never occurred to me that there were dodgy Sony players being sold at/through Amazon that were made in dear China, hence I never checked. However, the product description doesnt specify where the players were made anyway.
Word of advice: ask the seller what country the player was made in before you throw your money away.
Giving it another shot August 1, 2010 SuzieQ Purchased (2) identical MP3 players for our teenage sons. Ended up buying one back for own personal use. I play it a couple hours on a daily basis for yoga classes. After 6 month time, the internal port where you plug in an adapter is shot ~ no longer plays music to an external device. Of course it's past its warrantee. I like all the features, great sound and easy to use. I'm going to purchase one more and give this one another try. The other one I purchased is still working fine, but doesn't get nearly the continual use mine does.
